  • EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It's an evidence-based therapy originally developed in the late 1980’s to treat trauma, and it's now widely used to improve symptoms of anxiety, depression, grief, phobias, and more.

Here's the basic idea: our brains are wired to process and store experiences naturally. But sometimes, especially with overwhelming or painful experiences, that processing gets stuck. When a memory doesn't process completely, it can stay "frozen" in the nervous system, continuing to affect how we feel, think, and respond in the present, even when we're not consciously thinking about it.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation-most commonly eye movements, but also tapping or sound-to help the brain complete that processing.

What makes EMDR different from talk therapy is that you don't have to narrate your experience in detail or spend years analyzing it. The brain does much of the work itself — EMDR just creates the conditions for it to happen.

Clients often report feeling that EMDR works on a deeper level, shifting long held beliefs and reducing emotional reactivity that they had come to accept as just part of themselves.

Sessions are paced carefully, and include preparation work before any reprocessing begins. As a responsible trauma therapist, I take seriously my responsibility to ensure that you feel grounded and ready to begin this transformative work.

  • During the intake appointment, I will take a comprehensive history of your current symptoms, family structure, and background information, and assess for any mental health or substance abuse issues. I’ll also answer any questions you have, and address any concerns. Then, I’ll offer my insight into an individualized path forward for you.

  • There are many talented therapists out there, and it is important to be mindful of who you choose to trust for this deeply personal and transformative work. What I offer is a specific combination: advanced EMDR training at the consultant level, an integrative approach that draws on IFS, and a practice structure designed to keep the focus entirely on your care. If you have spent years in therapy trying to think your way out of anxiety and it hasn't worked, my practice was built for you, and I would be honored to walk with you on this path.
